Building A Sustainable Future At Stansted

Stansted Airport has today presented its annual sustainability report to the airport consultative committee. The report outlines how the social and economic benefits of airport are balanced against the environmental impacts of aviation. Key achievements in 2012 include:

  • Carbon Trust Standard retained and energy consumption reduced by 3.61%
    6% reduction in carbon emissions - equivalent to taking 5,335 cars off the road
    Air quality levels remain well within threshold set by UK Government
  • 58% total airport waste recycled or composted (+2.2% on 2011)
    74.5% waste diverted from landfill (+4.5% against target)
    On-track to achieve 2015 target to send zero waste direct to landfill
  • % of departing aircraft on-track
    Aircraft noise complaints down 16%
    Developed trial of new aircraft navigation system to improve track

Maintained position as leading major UK airport for passengers using public transport (50.8%)
877 members joined new car share scheme
Discounted travelcard sales for staff using public transport rose 6% compared to 2011

Still the biggest single site employer in region (10,200 people employed by 190 companies)
£1.5million trade deals estimated following annual procurement event in September
Over £250,000 donated to local charities and good causes

Sustainability is a key priority for Stansted’s senior leadership team, who ensure the right systems and strategies are in place and a clear direction set for a sustainable future.

Commenting on the 2012 report the airport’s new Managing Director, Andrew Harrison said:

“The past twelve months were challenging for many industries and aviation was no exception but Stansted has cause for celebration having retained its title as the World’s Best Airport for Low Cost Airlines, held onto Carbon Trust Standard, reduced carbon emissions by 6%, improved recycling performance and exceeded the 50% mark in terms of passengers using public transport.

“Under the new ownership of M.A.G we have a clear ambition to deliver dramatic improvements to the passenger experience alongside ensuring our operations are sustainable both today and in the future.”
