Team Stansted On Their Marks For The Olympics

26 Jul 2011

With just one year to go, Stansted Airport is forging ahead with its preparations as one of the main visitor gateways to the 2012 Games.

“Team Stansted” is an exciting new initiative to get all airport staff involved in the preparations for the huge influx of competing teams, spectators, media, VIPS, sponsors and Heads of State, anticipated to travel through Stansted during the period of the Olympics and Paralympics. The collaboration of all business partners is essential in order for the airport operation to run smoothly and to ensure the thousands of visitors from across the globe receive the best possible welcome to the UK.

Staff from all 200 on-airport companies will be invited to get involved to ensure Stansted delivers the best UK airport Olympic experience, utilising the airport knowledge and expertise of the nearly 11,000 strong workforce and their customer service skills, range of languages and cultural understanding.

Stansted is expecting to see thousands of additional passengers travelling through the airport during Games time, and could experience its busiest ever day when thousands of people depart from the UK the day after the closing ceremony.

The airport relies on every airport company to deliver their part of the detailed plans that are being developed to manage the huge numbers of arriving and departing passengers and equipment. These plans have already been tested this year by two high profile test events; the State visit of President Obama and the arrival and departure of FC Barcelona football team and 10,000 of their fans attending the Champions League final at Wembley. Both events provided a fantastic opportunity to showcase Stansted’s operational expertise in managing complex and sensitive visits whilst still maintaining usual flight schedules.

The airport is also expected to handle tonnes of unusual baggage which will be transported through the airport during Games time, including sports kit of all shapes and sizes and tonnes of equipment for the world’s media. Stansted’s expertise in logistical operations will also be tested with multiple equine movements, as during the previous Beijing Games.

Julia Gregory, Olympics Co-ordinator, Stansted Airport said;

“The Olympics is a truly exciting time for the airport and we look forward to being part of the world’s biggest sporting event. The 2012 Games will be a fantastic opportunity to showcase Stansted, especially as we are the nearest major international airport to the Olympic village.

“It will be a time for all of us, every member of staff from the airport and every airport company to work closely together to deliver the best UK airport Olympic experience. It will be time for ‘Team Stansted’ to deliver its very best.”
