Sworder’s Field was gifted to the former Bishop’s Stortford Urban District Council in 1928 by the late Joe Brazier. The land passed to BSTC in 1974 following local government reorganisation. The gift created a Charitable Trust called the Brazier Trust, which is administered by BSTC.
The site incorporates 2 skate facilities, a new multi-purpose goal/sports facility, 3 small youth shelters, a trim trail, slide and swings. There is also a large area of open space which is used for outdoor games. At the other end of the Field is a play area for younger children and a very popular paddling pool. Two tennis courts operated by the District Council are sited on the adjacent Castle Gardens. The play equipment is very well used and the skate parks very popular.
The Town Council prides itself on the standard of its play/sports equipment and is delighted at the success of the recently installed skate facility at the site, which had been generously funded through grants from the Town Council, Sport England, East Herts Council and Circle Anglia.
The field is the venue for the Town Council’s annual summer fun day, which follows the carnival and hosts a circus and a fair each year.
