The hotel scene in Hamburg reflects the wealthy status of the city, with plenty of high-end options available. The internationally renowned Hotel Atlantic Kempinski (An der Alster 72-79) offers traditional luxury, while Side (Drehbahn 49) is representative of a new wave of contemporary upscale accommodation. The Mercure Hotel Hamburg Mitte (Schroederstiftrasse 3) is a good mid-range choice, while those on a lower budget could do much worse than the Ibis Hamburg Alster Centrum (Holzdamm 4-12) which offers a strong central location.

There is no way that Hamburg could be accused of being short on shopping centres, from the modern Europapassagen (Ballindamm 40) to the historic setting of Alsterarkaden. The three undercover areas off Gänsemarkt are another popular spot, while those looking for greater luxury will love the Jungfernstieg (Neustadt). The area around the Neuer Wall boasts the highest concentration of classy boutiques, with renowned international brands such as Escada (Neuer Wall 32) and Jill Sander (Neuer Wall 43) residing in close comfort to local favourites such as Ladage & Oehlke (Neuer Wall 11), Möhring (Neuer Wall 25) and furniture store Bornhold (Neuer Wall 72). For those into their vintage bargains look no further than Classen Secondhand (Grillparzerstrasse 2).

Thanks to an influx of imaginative chefs from around the world, Hamburg has shed the former impression it bore as offering a conservative culinary scene. Traditional German fare is still the most popular choice, with restaurants such as Das Dorf (Lange Reihe 39) representing a real highlight, although there are plenty of places that experiment with various cultural influences. For well-priced Mediterranean eats try Le Canard Nouveau (Elbchaussee 139), or Piment (Lehmweg 29) for dishes with North African flavours. For a meal that offers incredible views to match the superb food, two-Michelin-star Haerlin (Neuer Jungfernstieg 9) is a worthy spot for a special occasion.
