The quintessentially Greek island of Crete boasts a history that dates back thousands of years, and you can uncover this storied past with holidays to Heraklion. Experience the beauty of the Aegean and soak up the local culture as you enjoy a break in this excellent destination. The largest of the Greek islands, Crete was the home of the infamous Minoan civilisation, which thrived from the fourth millennium BC. The ancient site of Knossos lies close to Heraklion, the place where the Minoans originated. Learn about the myths of the Labyrinth and Minotaur, and Icarus and Daedalus, as you explore the Palace of Knossos, one of Europe’s most notable ancient sites. Crete’s history is relayed to visitors by a fine selection of museums, including the Heraklion Archaeological Museum, the Historical Museum of Crete and the Natural History Museum of Crete, all of which can be regarded as a great place to call at. The Byzantines, Venetians and Ottomans are among the other peoples to have influenced the island, and there are a number of landmarks that show this in Heraklion. An example of this is the Venetian walls, which were originally built by the Byzantines, and stretch some three miles around the old town. The Venetian castle Koules is another lovely feature of the harbour in Heraklion. While away the time relaxing on the beach, on a horseback ride along the sands, or carelessly splashing around at the Water City and Aqua Plus water parks, prior to enjoying local specialities such as bougátsa or the delicious fresh seafood you'll find - there’s lots to enjoy with holidays to Heraklion from Stansted.
