About Lanzarote

Treasure trove of historic architecture

As the capital of Lanzarote, Arrecife and indeed the whole of the island has a refreshing and welcoming attitude to visitors, allowing you to explore the local sights and intensely relaxing beaches with the minimum of fuss. Situated on the eastern coast of the island, there is a treasure trove of historic architecture to be found around this beautiful port city, while the variety of museums and historic buildings never fail to draw the history-buffs away from the beautiful beaches…at least for a while.

There are strict building regulations in place in Lanzarote, meaning that there aren't any imposing tower blocks spoiling the views. Everything is low rise and often self-catering, while there are a number of stylish gems to choose from. The luxurious H10 Timanfaya Palace (Calle Gran Canaria 1, Montaña Roja) can be found in the main resort of Playa Blanca, as is the more moderately priced THB Tropical Island Resort (La Secreta). Get away from the main tourist hubs with a stay at the Gran Meliá Salinas (Avenida Islas Canarias), which boasts a delightful setting between two inviting white-sand beaches.

Most places in Lanzarote offer a selection of shops, markets and boutiques, so there are plenty of options when it comes to splashing the holiday spends. Head to the Calle Leon Y Castillo in Arrecife for well-known chains such as Zara and Vero Moda, a plethora of cigar emporia and even a small street market. For something a little more earthy, try the weekly market in laid-back Teguise, which sells everything from fresh local produce to handmade lace, African figurines and fake Rolexes.

Potatoes are prevalent in Lanzarote’s cuisine, from the wrinkled to the wild variety, namely papas arrugadas and papas crías. Delve into the traditional fare at El Diablo (Timanfaya National Park), which only opens for lunch, or go a little left-field and have a meal in a lava tube at Jameos del Agua (Road Orzola). Less dramatic is El Charcón (Arrieta Wharf), but the excellent seafood and sumptuous sea views are sure to be captivating.

Lanzarote Carnival

February-March

Lanzarote comes alive for a month for carnival, which sees plenty of dancing, parades, one-off exhibitions and events. Festivities begin in Arrecife, followed by San Bartolomé, Puerto del Carmen, Haría, Playa Blanca, Costa Teguise, Tinajo, Famara and La Graciosa.

Ironman Lanzarote

May

Take on the physically punishing Ironman Lanzarote and prepare for a 3.8km swim off the coast of Playa Grande which is then followed by a 180km bike ride around the island before finishing with the small matter of a marathon along the promenade in Puerto del Carmen.

Corpus Christi

June

A vibrant procession over an elaborate carpet made from coloured salt around the church of San Ginés in Arrecife is the highlight of Lanzarote’s Corpus Christi celebrations.

International Jazz Festival

July

This festival attracts some of the world’s top jazz performers, with a huge marquee in Teguise playing host to the main event, a free concert.

Fiesta of the Virgen de los Dolores

September

This celebration of the Virgen de los Dolores, Lanzarote’s patron saint, is a great excuse for the locals to get into the party spirit each September. Expect plenty of overindulgence on food and drink, although there is a religious element to the fiesta.
