A multi-cultural city with an eclectic history, Malaga has its roots in Roman, Moorish and Spanish cultures and this is reflected in its architecture and many ancient ruins. One of the city’s most famous ruins is the Alcazaba that overlooks the harbour. Built in the 11th century, this fort features stunning workmanship and the remnants of a Roman theatre built in 1 BC. This Spanish city is packed with wonderful museums and art galleries such as the Museo Carmen Thyssen and the Museo Picasso Malaga. Malaga is the birth place of Picasso so it’s with good reason that there is an entire gallery here dedicated to his work. For some fresh air and exercise, Malaga offers many cycling tour routes as well as beaches to lie back on. For a more adventurous outdoors excursion travel to the peculiar natural phenomenon of El Torcal, a series of otherworldly rock formations set in the Andalusian countryside. Several planned walking routes begin at the visitors centre and allow you to enjoy the spectacular landscape at your own pace. Malaga is in a great location for visiting other significant sites. Travel to the mesmerising Alhambra palace in nearby Granada for a dose of Early Modern history, or tempt your taste buds with a trip to one of the regions many vineyards. Just across the water from exotic Morocco, it is also possible to take day trips to Tangier or even Gibraltar for a spot of sightseeing, shopping and delicious cuisine. This vibrant city is also home to many great restaurants and bars, as well as having a good selection of clubs to dance the night away in. Indulge in a paella cooking class or watch traditional Flamenco dancing as you eat; the possibilities are endless with holidays to Malaga from Stansted.
