Situated in south-west Spain, the region of Murcia has much to offer whether you’re there to indulge in some exhilarating water sports along the Costa Cálida, take a dip in Europe’s largest salt water lagoon, or have an interest in history or archaeology. Capital, Murcia, is an easily navigable city on the Segura River which has plenty of terraces and squares to wander through. Outdoor living is embraced here due to the temperate climate so expect many outdoor restaurants and street markets. Head to the old town and explore the streets that are still named after the guilds that used to work there such as Traperia, meaning ‘drapers’. For a day away from the beach, Murcia has plenty of museums to keep all the family amused. Browse some spectacular sculptures at the Salzillo Museum in Murcia, or learn more about the port town of Cartagena’s 2500 year history at the Concepcion Castle that sits high on the hills above the town. The Levantine UNESCO World Heritage site in the Almadenes Canyon is also well worth a visit to awe at the 50 or so figure paintings that line the spectacular cave walls. The region’s past is heavily influenced by Moorish culture and it is still possible to see remains of some stunning architecture around, such as the Alumnia Real located just north of Murcia city. The Santa Clara Museum in the city holds a large collection of Islamic art and historical artefacts that will give you more insight into the Moorish era. Murcia’s yearly calendar is jam-packed with incredible festivities such as the San Javier International Jazz Festival in July, the Flamenco Festival in San Pedro del Pinatar, and the grape harvesting festival in Jumilla in August. Holidays to Murcia from Stansted promise distinct variety whether you stick to the inner cities or wander down to the beautiful coast.
