Found close to the north western coastline of Spain, holidays to Santiago De Compostela open up a destination that has experienced a real resurgence since the 1980s. Tourism has been on the increase and around 200,000 religious pilgrims visit the city each year, thanks to belief that Saint James the Great, an apostle of Jesus Christ, was buried at the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. The name of the city is believed to originate from the story surrounding the burial of Santiago Apóstol, with ‘Compostela’ thought to come from the Latin campus stellae, which means field of the star. Saint James the Apostle was brought back to the region, where he preached, after he died, and the tomb is said to have been rediscovered in the 9th century by a religious believer who followed a guiding star, hence the name. By the 11th century the pilgrimage along the Way of Saint James - Camino de Santiago - was a highly popular trail, and this has continued to this day. The Praza do Obradoiro is the heart of the city and the end point of the pilgrimage, with the cathedral opening out onto the square. Other sights around town include the Church of Santa María a Real do Sar, the ancient monastery of San Martiño Pinario, and the City of Culture project, which is a complex of cultural buildings on the outskirts of town. Santiago De Compostela boasts an excellent reputation among foodies thanks to its lovely cuisine, while the events calendar offers an energetic Carnival, more sombre Holy Week, and the interesting Feria del Ganado, which celebrates Galicia’s Celtic roots. Whether you're looking for religious fulfilment or just a great destination to enjoy a break, holidays to Santiago De Compostela from Stansted are a great choice.
