Information Assistant
Yolanda – Information Assistant, BAA Heathrow
Being part of the information desk team is great fun. A good sense of humour is a must and helps to deal with some of our rather more 'interesting' members of the public – mind-reading abilities are useful too, to enable you to determine what they really want.
Take for example the lady who spoke English but not as her first language. She wanted to know how she could save her marriage. We finally worked out it was her air miles that she wanted to save. I wonder how her marriage is these days?
Seriously though, after their long flights passengers can become rather disorientated and a helpful approach with a smiling face can help to see them through Heathrow smoothly.
We have a very difficult job to do at times so you have to have your wits about you. We can be called upon to assist the police, immigration or customs services with translation during their official enquiries.
Our foreign language-speaking abilities are an absolute necessity as many of our passengers do not speak English. If you think you've seen it all, come and join us, there will be a few surprises in store.
