While millions of us enjoy flying every year there is a noisy downside for the people who live or work near to airports.
Charitable support
Charity of the year
BAA Heathrow staff have chosen Marie Curie Cancer Care as their first ever Charity of the Year in 2007/2008. The aim is to raise £100,000 for Marie Curie over the year through a range of fundraising events. This will pay for 5,000 hours of nursing care in the local community and will mean that over a hundred local terminal cancer sufferers – and their families – will be able to receive care and support in their own homes. For more information on Marie Curie, please go to www.mariecurie.org.uk/
Over £60,000 has been raised so far. Upcoming fundraising events in aid of Marie Curie include the Heathrow 10k Midnight Runway Run on 10th May 2008. For more information, please email heathrowcommunityrelations@baa.com or call 020 8745 5791.
Community and Environment Awards
The BAA Heathrow Community & Environment Awards are a source of support for schools, voluntary organisations and community groups. Grants of up to £2500 are awarded six times per year to exciting local community projects, focusing on five themes: ‘reduce, re-use, recycle’; ‘climate change and energy’; ‘protecting and enhancing our environment’; ‘bringing communities together’ and ‘developing skills’.
The awards are funded in a unique way – foreign and British currency is donated every day by passengers in Heathrow’s baggage halls and departure lounges. BAA Heathrow and the BAA Communities Trust match-fund the money donated by passengers up to a cap of £20,000 per annum from each organisation. Based on our previous passenger collections we predict there will be around £100,000 available for the awards in 2008.
