Transforming our airports
From Heathrow Terminal 5 to Aberdeen BAA is developing and implementing investment plans to transform the operations and the traveller experience over the coming years. Heathrow Terminal 5 and “Heathrow East” are the most high-profile projects but investment in significant infrastructure improvements is also planned and in progress at Gatwick, Stansted and our three Scottish airports.
Heathrow Terminal 5
Terminal 5 phase 1, which incorporates the main terminal building and satellite 1 is now 95% complete and remains on schedule to open in March 2008.
Terminal 5 will become an overnight ‘icon’ – a new London landmark and a spectacular global gateway for over 30 million passengers; a gateway entry point to one of the world’s most vibrant capital cities. And the retail experience will make arriving early a genuinely worthwhile decision! Over 140 shops, bars and restaurants will offer everything from Wagamama, Giraffe and Gordon Ramsay dining experiences to shopping with brands such as Tiffany & Co, Paul Smith Globe and Ted Baker.
Terminal 5 is not a one-off. It’s the first statement of our bigger intent – which is to transform all the rest of Heathrow and our other airports. The standards we set in Terminal 5 create the benchmark for the experience that we intend to deliver everywhere. Irrespective of size or scale, the retail and catering experience will aim to achieve our ultimate ambition – to make all our airports places that travellers want to get to early, enjoy to the full, and tell their friends about.
Heathrow East
We have now received planning approval for a new passenger terminal “Heathrow East”. These plans involve the demolition of Terminal 2 and Queen’s Building creating a single replacement terminal. During that process Terminal 1 will also close down and the space it occupies will be incorporated into Heathrow East. The plan will create retail and catering experiences that will be equally as exciting as the experience we will deliver in Terminal 5.
By 2012 it is intended that at least 65% of the travellers using Heathrow will be travelling through new or significantly refurbished facilities.
