Passengers

Pie chart showing the proportion of Stansted passengers travelling to and from the airport by different types of transport

Car use
In 2007, 44.6% of our non-transferring passengers travel to or from Stansted using public transport, which equates to about 9.7 million passengers a year. The proportion of passengers using private cars has fallen from 52.1% in 2000 to 43.7% in 2007.

Bus and coach
We have worked to develop a network of more than 60 destinations and more than 550 departures a day from Stansted. The proportion of bus and coach mode share has grown from 6.7% in 2000 to 20.1% in 2007. Patronage has increased by more than 250% in this period.

Rail
We have worked with the two rail companies that serve Stansted Airport to further develop the rail timetable to meet the needs of air passengers and staff. As a result, the Stansted Express service to London expanded its operating day in both the early morning and late evening and Cross Country Trains, which operate to the north of Stansted, is introducing a new timetable in December 2008.

The companies have also been working hard to improve their punctuality and customer service standards with good results. Rail passenger patronage has continued to grow over the years with an increase in air passengers, and 2007 also saw an increase in rail mode share from 2006 from 23.7% to 24.5%.

Off-airport fly-parking
As part of our planning obligations we provided £50,000 towards implementing appropriate fly-parking mitigation measures. Schemes which have been funded include:

• New parking restrictions in Takeley in 2007 by Essex County Council;
• Hertfordshire County Council progressing parking restrictions in areas of Bishop’s Stortford funded by the same commitment; and
• BAA and Essex County Council working together to prevent parking on Parsonage Lane near the airport boundary.

Reports received by our fly parking phone line have also reduced considerably.

Employee travel
In 2007, we opened a dedicated Airport Commuter Centre at Stansted. The team provides a travel plan service to all airport companies and advise staff on their travel options to and from work. In 2007, more than 6,000 staff made contact with the centre.

Car use
For the 12,000 employees on airport we are currently achieving a figure of 73% of staff driving to the airport by private car. This figure has progressively reduced since the introduction of our Airport Travel Plan in 2002 when the percentage of staff who drove to work was 86%.

Airport Travelcard
Sales of Stansted’s Airport Travelcard – which provides discounted travel for all on-airport employees on all public transport serving the airport - continue to grow at 23% a year. The Airport Travelcard is estimated to save about 550,000 kg of CO2 a month.

Car sharing scheme
Membership to our airport car share scheme has continued to grow at 25% per year. Throughout 2007 the scheme has continued to develop with new enforcement measures being introduced.

Freight traffic and suppliers
In 2007 we launched a Stansted Freight Quality Partnership with our cargo operators and suppliers bringing goods to the airport.

We also conducted a study of the origins of suppliers vehicles entering the airport. 45% deliveries had a local origin within 15 miles of the airport and 33% within 60 miles. We are working with freight carriers to understand the complex logistics chains that they operate.
