Air quality

Our target for 2007

Category Target Performance
Air quality To develop and publish a Local Air Quality Strategy for Stansted by 31 December 2007. Some progress made

Air quality monitoring
The result of our 2007 continuous air quality monitoring, for pollutants nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and fine particulates (PM10), are in the graphs below which show the levels of these pollutants at our monitoring sites.

Graph showing Stansted air quality annual mean (NO2 and PM10)

The results confirm that:

  • The current air quality in and around the airport is within the thresholds set by the Government
  • They show a static or slightly improved result compared to 2006
  • There were no breaches of the national or international air quality standards during 2007.

During 2007 we have been busy working on the following:

Emissions inventory
We asked our expert consultants to review the sources of emissions at the airport. This work will be incorporated into our Air Quality Strategy when published.

Case study: Fixed Electrical Ground Power (FEGP) work
In 2007 we continued our focus on improving the use of FEGP, which helps to reduce aircraft emissions on the ground as aircraft can switch off their internal generators which run on jet fuel. To do this we have been working closely with airline operators (specifically easyJet and Air Berlin) and aircraft manufacturers to improve the usage of this system. We have developed and provided posters and training CDs to ramp managers, who are responsible for managing the turnaround of aircraft at the airport. We have also improved our process for the day-to-day monitoring of the system so that we can respond swiftly to any technical problems.

Transport to and from the airport
Improvements include:

  • Use of the Airport's Travelcard and car share schemes both grew by more than 20% in 2007
  • The proportion of passengers using public transport at the airport has increased to above 44%, putting us at the top of the UK airport rankings and one of the highest in Europe.

More details on all of these can be found in the Transport to our airport section of this report.

Air quality strategy
While we were not able to publish our air quality strategy by the end of 2007 as we had hoped, as a priority we have been working hard on our climate change approach, much of which will benefit and help to guide our air quality work.

Our draft strategy for air quality is complete however, and we will shortly be consulting with our stakeholders on this. This details how the airport intends to manage air quality between now and 2015.
