Waste
Our target for 2007
| Category | Target | Performance |
|---|---|---|
| Waste | To recycle at least 30% of airport waste between April 2007 and December 2007. | No progress made |
2007 proved to be a challenging year following:
- Ongoing security restrictions on liquids permitted to be carried in hand baggage at UK aviation. Due to the nature of the security restrictions, many items surrendered or confiscated at security cannot be recycled
- A major change in the airport waste management contract in March 2007. Although the changeover caused some initial disruption the benefits of working with our new contractor are now being seen and we expect further improvements during 2008.
To decrease waste generated by the security restrictions on liquids we have worked hard to better inform our passengers of the regulations earlier in their journey. We have also introduced a pre-security sorting area in the terminal which has reduced the volume of confiscated items and also enabled us to recycle some of the waste generated by the regulations.
However, despite these attempts to mitigate these challenges, we fell behind our recycling target of 30%, achieving an average of 22.6% for the year.
