Record breaking summer at Stansted
New passenger figures released today reveal Stansted Airport has made history by smashing all previous records by recording its busiest month and its busiest day ever during August.
Last month more than 2.5 million passengers travelled through Stansted – a 7% increase on August 2006 - with the busiest day recorded on Friday 24th August when nearly 90,000 used the airport terminal.
Mark Murphy, Stansted’s customer services director, said:
“The record breaking summer at Stansted is great news for everyone at the airport and reflects the huge team effort that all our staff have made to ensure that the busiest period in our history has been the success that it has.
“Maintaining an enhanced security operation whilst keeping queuing time to a minimum at Stansted has been our top priority over the summer. With the 300 additional security staff, an extended security search area, the hard work of all the operational teams and the additional volunteers assisting in the terminal – passengers have had as smooth a journey as possible through the airport.
“I would like to thank all our staff and passengers for contributing towards the success of the summer and, as we turn our attentions to the autumn, look forward to what promises to be another exciting period, with the arrival next month of American Airlines offering a daily service to New York.”
