Getting to and from the airport

Away from the emissions generated by aircraft and the airports themselves, there is another impact associated with air travel, albeit indirectly: that of passengers travelling to and from the airport itself.
At BAA and Stansted we are committed to increasing the use of public transport wherever we can. Today over 44% of passengers travelling to and from our airport do so by public transport. That is a higher proportion than any other UK airport and the second highest in Europe.
Delivering transport improvements at Stansted
As part of our plans to build a second runway and terminal, a number of proposed improvements will be made to the transport infrastructure around Stansted, benefiting passengers and non-passenger alike, these include:
Rail
- ‘Four-tracking’ part of the rail line between the airport and London;
- More carriages on Stansted Express services in peak hours;
- Second rail tunnel and fourth platform at the airport train station; and
Bus and coach
- Expanding and redeveloping the airport bus and coach station to allow new routes and increased service frequency.
