Here is the timeline for our future plans for growth on our existing runway and proposed second runway.
23 July 2002
The Secretary of State for Transport announces the start of a major UK Government consultation to examine and decide how the UK's air services and airports should develop over the next 30 years. The consultation is referred to as SERAS (South East and East of England Regional Air Services).
12 May 2003
BAA issued its response calling for the responsible growth of aviation.
16 December 2003
White Paper, The Future of Air Transport published.
July to October 2005
Public Consultation on Generation 1 proposal.
9 December 2005 to 24 March 2006
Three month public consultation on the different runway options and our preferred option for second runway development.
26 April 2006
Generation 1 planning application, to increase the capacity on the existing runway submitted.
May 2006
Interim Master plan published outlining the development of Stansted as a one-runway airport.
29 November 2006
Uttlesford District Council refuses permission for Generation 1 planning application.
5 December 2006
BAA Stansted submits planning appeal.
30 January 2007
- Report of consultation and proposed location of second runway announced.
- Revised boundaries for HOSS voluntary blight scheme announced
February 2007
Consultation on surface access options begins.
May 2007 - October 2007
Public inquiry held at Endeavour House, Stansted Airport on plans to raise passenger limits on Stansted's existing runway operation from 25m to 35m per year. Government decision expected in 2008.
February 2008
NATS, the air traffic service provider, begins consultation on proposed changes to airspace design in the 'Terminal Control North' area, which includes Stansted.
11 March 2008
Planning applications for a second runway at Stansted are submitted to local authority, Uttlesford District Council.
Spring 2008
BAA consults local people on an Airport Noise Action Plan - to help shape our proposals for managing air and ground noise in the next five years.
21 July 2008
Second runway planning applications are 'called in' by the Government and will now proceed to a public inquiry in 2009. Decision will no longer be determined by Uttlesford District Council.
9 October 2008
Government grants permission for growth on existing runway following an independent public inquiry. Stansted can now operate up to 35m passengers a year and 264,000 air transport movements a year on its current runway.
April 2009
Public inquiry on second runway development plans expected to take place.
Late 2010
Government decision expected on proposal for a second runway.
2011
Construction on second runway development begins, subject to planning approval.
2015
Date a two runway Stansted could open.
