Airspace

Permission will be needed from the Civil Aviation Authority – the body that regulates the use of airspace across the UK – to approve new aircraft routes needed by the extra air traffic associated with the second runway. We expect any proposals to change the airspace will be published for public consultation in around 2012, in advance of the second runway opening.
This is not to be confused with the current consultation by NATS – the body responsible for safely managing airspace – which at the moment is asking for views on the re-design of the busy airspace around London airports, including Stansted.
As part of our current planning application we have prepared a full Environmental Assessment to give details of the environmental effects associated with a second runway development. This includes advice we have received from NATS about where aircraft will be likely to fly with a second runway in operation.
