Road and rail
- Stansted is top in the UK for passengers travelling to and from the airport by public transport around 40%
- Improvements planned for bus, rail and car users
A two-runway Stansted serving 68m passengers in around 2030, coupled with an expanding East of England population, means increasing pressure on the region’s transport infrastructure, but it also presents some big opportunities too.
Stansted currently has a greater proportion of its passengers using public transport than any other UK airport. Working with Government agencies and other transport partners, Stansted aims to increase this proportion even further as it grows.
Proposed improvements include:
- Providing additional 12-car Stansted Express services in peak hours;
- Expanding and redeveloping the airport bus and coach station to allow new coach routes and increased frequency on existing services;
- Building a second rail tunnel and a fourth platform at the airport railway station, to increase rail capacity at the airport; and
- Working with Network Rail and government to ‘four-track’ part of the line to Liverpool Street to increase capacity on the line for passengers and commuters.
Road improvements include:
- Improvements to M11 and A120 road junctions; and
- Increasing the capacity of the M11 between the M25 and Stansted Airport (Junctions 6 to 8) possibly in the form of widening.
Work will also be carried out to divert local roads and public rights of way affected by the second runway project.
