About Maastricht

Located in the southern tip of the Netherlands, bordered by Germany to the east and Belgium to the west, Maastricht is a lively and energetic city that’s distinguished by its rich history and vibrant cultural scene. Being squeezed in between two countries has its advantage when it comes to food and drink too, with culinary influences from both of its neighbours helping to make Maastricht the food capital of the Netherlands – over 500 pubs and cafés at a recent conservative count, including several Michelin-starred restaurants in the region.

Maastricht also makes the number two spot in the Netherlands’ most cultural cities, with multiple museums and theatres, including Bonnefanten, a striking museum on the banks of the Mass River where every type of art imaginable is exhibited, and Theater aan het Vrijthof, which puts on everything from traditional plays to jazz club evenings to heavy metal gigs. The city is also known for its beautiful architecture, with over 1,600 national heritage buildings – check out the cobbled Old Town and visit the Gothic-style Sint Janskerk church or the stunning Romanesque Basilica of St. Servatius.
