About Basel

Blessed with many influences

Basel sits conveniently in the heart of Western Europe, just inside Switzerland on the border of France and Germany. Basel therefore is blessed with many influences, and boasts a rich culture and plenty of contrast. The city is a central hub of commerce and transport, although thanks to the Rhine splitting the centre in two, there are quaint ferryboats that carry passengers across town.

Basel map

Basel’s central districts boast a variety of accommodation ranging from grand hotels to stylish boutiques and family-run guesthouses. There are a number of superb options along the attractive banks of the Rhine, including the modern boutique Hotel D (Blumenrain 19), and charming mid-range Krafft Basel (Rheingasse 12). Those on a five-star budget should look at the Grand Hotel Les Trois Rois (Blumenrain 8), which is steeped in character and elegance. For a convenient location next to Basel’s train station try the Euler Hotel Basel (Centralbahnplatz 14), or to get away from the crowds consider three-star offering Hotel Bildungszentrum 21 (Missionsstrasse 21), which lies in a pretty private park.

Basel can lay claim to a diverse shopping scene, from internationally recognisable big brands to independent shops and markets. Head to the Old Town for vintage clothing and unique items, and be sure to explore the narrow alleyways of the Spalenberg. In this area you will find Johann Wanner (Spalenberg 14), where Christmas goods can be purchased all year round. For designer boutiques head to Freie Strasse, where big names such as Louis Vuitton (Freie Strasse 88) and Hermès (Freie Strasse 107) are located. Shoppers seeking antiques should head to Saturday’s market in St Peter’s Square, while those in town on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month can hit the flea market at Barfüsserplatz for some excellent bargains.

Whether your budget is large or small, Basel’s dining scene offers restaurants to suit, from celebrated Michelin-starred haunts to cheap and cheerful Swiss spots. It would be difficult to find a place more traditional than Löwenzorn (Gemsberg 2/4), which can point to parts of its building that date back to the 14th century, and serves well-priced local dishes in carved wood surrounds. If you're after a lively meal out then try Acqua (Binningerstrasse 14), an Italian joint that is decked out with log fires, candlelit tables and loud music. The atmosphere is quite different at Cheval Blanc (Blumenrain 8), a fine dining restaurant that boasts a more intimate feel and to Michelin stars. Meanwhile Restaurant Stucki (Bruderholzallee 42) can also lay claim to two stars thanks to an interestingly creative menu.
