Bologna

Bologna is a real favourite among travellers thanks to its renowned cuisine and distinctive red-brick and portico architecture. Stay at the five-star Grand Hotel Majestic gia'Baglioni (Via Indipendenza 8) in the heart of the city for a decadent night’s rest. Antica Residenza D'Azeglio (Via Massimo D'Azeglio 64) is a more intimate option that sacrifices nothing by way of luxury, and is ideal for a romantic getaway. Funky B&B Chez Moi (Vicolo Bolognetti 26) is charming and mid-range in terms of price, while Casa Ilaria (Largo Respighi 8) is a more traditional offering. For those on a tight budget the Hotel Corticella (Via Stoppato 31) is a clean and tidy option.

One of the top shopping destinations in Italy, Bologna’s city centre is packed with quirky boutiques and designer stores. The prevalence of Italian fashion and leather goods make it difficult not to splurge, with shopping streets Via Indipendenza and Via Castiglione full of great opportunities for gorgeous items. Boutiques such as Cappelleria Trentini (Via Indipendenza 33) and Casa dello Sport (Via San Stefano 6) are hugely popular among the trendy folk of Bologna, as is the vast Borgo delle Tovaglie Flagship Store (Via Farini 10).

‘The fat one’ nickname that Bologna wields is a clear indication of the strength of the city’s dining scene. Local specialities such as tagliatelle with ragu, tortellini and mortadella must be tried. One of the best restaurants in town is Pappagallo (Piazza della Mercanzia 3), which offers traditional Bolognese fare, while Michelin-starred Trattoria Battibecco (Via Battibecco 4) scores highly among those into their fine dining. A delicious pizza at Nicola's Pizzeria (Piazza San Martino) won’t hurt the wallet quite as much, nor will the simple yet tasty pasta dishes at Trattoria Fantoni (Via del Pratello 11).
