About Lisbon

A city that dances with living history while basking in the sun-drenched climate

The undeniable shining star of Portugal, Lisbon is a city that dances with living history while basking in the sun-drenched climate. As the capital city of Portugal, Lisbon holds a magical quality brought about by an impressive selection of mighty gothic-style cathedrals and stunning architecture. Here you can sit back in one of the city’s many fine cafés and restaurants, before heading off to explore the amazing retail and antiques stores on offer, or head off to one of the nearby beaches for some much needed rest and relaxation.

Lisbon’s hotel scene is ever-improving, and choices range from luxurious character and regular city centre haunts and beachside resorts to family-run pensoes, or guest houses. For something in the mid-range price bracket, try quirky boutique guest house As Janelas Verdes (Rua das Janelas Verdes 47), or if you're after luxury try Olissippo Lapa Palace (Rua do Pau da Bandeira 4) for a hotel-come-mansion imbued with personality. For the beach-lovers out there, venture a little out of the city centre and stay in Cascais at somewhere like the Cascais Miragem (Avenida Marginal 8554).

Lisbon is packed with excellent shopping opportunities thanks in some part to its colonial past, which sees a wide variety of goods on sale in the city’s stores and boutiques. The most notable retail streets are Rua Áurea, Rua da Prata and Rua Augusta, while for the convenience of everything being under one roof head to one of Europe’s biggest shopping centres, Centro Colombo (Avenida Lusíada). Tuesdays and Saturdays herald ‘The Thieves Market’, Feira da Ladra (Campo de Santa Clara), where everything from clothes to homewares can be picked up for bargain prices. Head to Rua Dom Pedro V for antiques, or browse the characterful family-run Conserveira de Lisboa (Rua dos Bacalhoeiros 34), although their canned fish might not make for the ideal holiday gift.

There is a multitude of delicacies for which Lisbon is noted, ranging from cinnamon-sprinkled custard tarts to piri-piri chicken and salted cod. For delicious tarts and other baked goods Casa Pastéis De Belém (Rua de Belém 84-92) comes highly recommended, with a history dating back to 1837. The similarly storied Café Martinho da Arcada (Praça do Comercio 3) is even more antiquated, and still sets aside an empty table for poet and former regular Fernando Pessoa, who died in 1935. If you're feeling flush, head to Feitoria (Doca do Bom Sucesso) and let the Michelin-starred chef seduce your taste buds with a menu that integrates former colonial influences, with traditional Portuguese dishes.
