Poprad is a hidden gem located at the foot of Slovakia’s High Tatras Mountains. It is a gateway to the natural beauty of several surrounding National Parks and its baroque buildings reflect the city’s rich cultural heritage. Significant historic landmarks include the 13th-century St. Egidius Church which dominates the central Námestie sv. Egídia square. In the northeast lies the well-preserved Spišská Sobota area with its centuries-old houses and picturesque churches.
The fascinating Podtatranske Museum, housed in a beautifully restored building, is filled with interactive exhibits, traditional folk costumes, historic maps and works of art which tell the story of the local people. The Tatra Gallery, occupying an old power plant, displays works by Slovak and international artists. The nearby Dobšinská Ice Cave is a great place for a day out with its winding tunnels leading to stalactites, stalagmites, and other dramatic natural formations.
