About Palanga

About Palanga

As the only seaside destination in Lithuania, Palanga is one of the country’s most popular holiday spots. It has a fantastic reputation in Lithuania that it has well deserved with a commitment to avoiding the tacky trappings found in similar European beach resorts. While you’re unlikely to enjoy the same warm climate that you could in more southern European destinations, Palanga has made the best of its unique status and added plenty of attractions to entice both families and couples. For a unique beach holiday, there’s nowhere better than Palanga.

Palanga map

With a high proportion of Lithuanians visiting each year, Palanga caters for every type of visitor and budget. If you’re looking for the very best accommodation in Palanga you should consider staying at the modern Palanga Spa Luxury or the flawless Vanagupe hotel. Backpackers and thrifty travellers are also sure to get a good deal in Palanga as many of the mid-range hotels are considerably cheaper than their counterparts in other European countries.

Although you may not think of Lithuania as a shopping destination, Palanga specialises in retail therapy with plenty of options for tourists looking to go on a spree. Jewellery hunters will be happy to hear that the local pride is a rare form of amber which is used by several jewellers to create unique keepsakes. If you want to find some souvenirs and incredible Jewellery, the Baltijos Auskas and Amber Stall Market should be at the top of your to-do list.

Lithuanian cuisine might be a bit of an acquired taste as most so you’ll be pleased to know that Palanga offers one of the most diverse menus of any Lithuanian town. Restaurants offer everything for Cuban sandwiches to Italian pizzas and Russian stews. However, if you are feeling a little braver you may want to try the local beetroot soup with kefir or even smoked conger eel which many believe to be a delicacy.

As a common summer destination, Palanga has several big events throughout the warmest months to make any visit extra special – aim to visit during these events to see the town at its best:

Resort Celebrations

During May Palanga reaches its highest temperatures and begins drawing in tourists from Lithuania and it’s surrounding countries. To make the most of this sudden influx, the resort's band together and put on a huge festival with fireworks, dancing and shows on the beach. The resort celebrations are superb and a great way to experience the best of Palanga.

Labas Festas

While this might not be one for families, Palanga’s Labas Festas dance festival is the perfect way to see several world-famous DJs. The festival often has a line up to rival many British festivals with the added benefit of being set up on Palanga beach, so you can watch the tide roll in as you rave through the night.
