The time for popping champagne corks and skies filled with fireworks is nearly upon us. As New Year erupts, destinations across the globe celebrate it with their own particular pizazz. Here’s our pick of destinations that’ll see you ringing in 2016 in style.

Edinburgh Castle

Nearly 150,000 people from around the world descend on the streets of Edinburgh for a three-day New Year's Eve Hogmanay party consisting of top international bands and events such as the ever popular Concert in the Gardens. The famous street party has been expanded for 2015's celebrations and includes an additional stage, ensuring more people than ever can get a glimpse of the unforgettable firework display which sees the sky above the lurching castle illuminated in dramatic fashion.

German cities notoriously know how to put on a party and the capital is no different. There are various spots worth taking up in Berlin for the New Year's Eve countdown, including Brandenburger Tor, where around 1 million people gather amidst the famous tourist location to take in the impressive fireworks display. For a decidedly lower key setting to bring in the New Year, there are a number of river boat cruises which take in spectacular views of the city before the countdown to midnight, providing a unique experience lingering long in the memory.

Berlin Brandenburg Gate

Accommodating of revellers and romantics alike, Amsterdam can offer the perfect way to spend the last moments of the year however you desire. Straightforward navigation of the capital's streets lends itself to spontaneous bar crawls or parties, while clubs located throughout the city in popular nightlfe hangouts of Leidseplein and Rembrandtplein appeal to a wide range of music tastes.

The Italian’s have a refined approach to the New Year. Why not dress up in black tie (and the customary red underwear) and join them. Capodanno is a feast lasting several hours, during which lentils are eaten for future wealth. Come the clinking of midnight glasses parties descend into the beautiful city streets; head to Piazza Duomo for classical concerts, fireworks and a delightful start to 2016.

Milan Duomo New Year
Vienna New Year

For those after a cultural end to the year, Vienna is unmissable. One of Europe’s most sophisticated cities, annual highlights include the Vienna Philharmonic playing at the beautifully ornate Musikverein concert hall, whilst the Vienna State Opera’s performance of Johann Strauss' Die Fledermaus is a well-loved tradition. Tickets are highly sought after, but those lucky enough to go to the Vienna Gala will toast midnight with champagne and the Blue Danube Waltz.
