About Pardubice

Many tourists head straight to the capital, but Pardubice is a hidden gem - famous for its gingerbread and steeplechase, this Czech city has plenty to offer.

Take a stroll past the city's beautiful historical buildings, including Dům U Bílého koníčka (House at the White Horse), Kamenná vila (Stone Villa) and the City Hall, then up to the top of the Green Gate - a 60 metre tall tower with magnificent views of the town monument zone, the chateau and the surrounding areas. On the second Sunday of October, the oldest and most difficult steeplechase in Europe takes place here, with riders overcoming 31 obstacles on a 6,900m long track.

Shopping fans can head to the Palac, a local shopping centre with a wide range of stores and restaurants under one roof, as well as a cinema. If you fancy sampling some of the city's famous gingerbread, tourists and locals alike love JaJa, a family-run business which offers an assortment of 70 types of beautifully decorated gingerbread.

U dvou kohoutku is a popular restaurant serving hearty traditional food, with a terrace for those warmer evenings, whilst Na Cibulce is cosy and comes highly recommended by visitors. Head to Prostě for a wide selection of gin and rum, and some very inventive cocktails, in stylish surroundings.

Although Prague is close by and offers larger public holiday spectaculars, Pardubice has plenty to offer visitors during major Czech Republic festivals as well as some holidays of its own:

The Golden Helmet of Pardubice

One of the Czech Republic’s biggest sports events, the Golden Helmet of Pardubice is a hotly contested motorbike race in and around the city. The action is fast paced and intense with plenty of drama and rivalries to be settled – making it a brilliant day out for the whole family.

Liberation Day

Liberation Day celebrates the end of World War II and the freedom of the Czech Republic from Nazi rule. It’s a fiercely patriotic holiday and the perfect time to sample Czech culture. Keep an eye out for street food and performers for a true Czech experience.
