About Weeze

While often overlooked due to its proximity to Dusseldorf, Essen and Cologne, the town of Weeze makes for a fantastic alternative to the many German city breaks tourists favour. Sitting on Germany’s border with the Netherlands, the town offers a fusion of German and Dutch influences that lets visitors experience both cultures simultaneously. The surrounding countryside of Weeze is one of its greatest attractions as there are several cycling and walking routes that start and end in the town. If you’re in the mood for a relaxing country getaway Weeze is ideal.

Weeze map

Although Weeze doesn’t have the range of hotel options you’d find in many of the German cities, the town has several boutique bed & breakfasts that make for comfortable couple and family accommodation. Costs vary as some of the bed & breakfasts have amenities to rival many hotels, but even the thriftiest backpackers should be able to find a comfortable bed. If you’re looking for the very best accommodation in Weeze then you should consider the slightly more upmarket Pension Heideway or Schloss Wissen Hotel lleric.

The main high-street of Weeze offers plenty for visitors to enjoy however, if you’re looking to go on a spree there are some incredible shopping experiences within a couple of minutes’ drive. If you head slightly south-east you will be able to visit the CentrO shopping centre which claims to be the biggest mall in Europe. Alternatively, you can head further west into the Netherlands and explore several local towns where you can buy plenty of Dutch souvenirs.

The cuisine in Weeze is unique as it combines the best offerings from the Dutch and German diet. You’ll find plenty of classic German food on offer, however, first-time visitors to the town should make a point of trying the schnitzel as it’s said to be particularly good in the region. If you’re looking for something a little different keep an eye out for Himmel und Erde, which is a blend of mashed potatoes and apple sauce served with blood sausage.

By cherry-picking the best festivities from both Germany and the Netherlands, Weeze can offer unique events for both locals and visitors. If you want to experience Weeze at its best these are the times to visit:

Parookaville

On paper, Parookaville festival is weird – a festival dedicated to possibly fictional architect who planned to create a utopian town before his untimely death that involves a combination of Burning Man-like creativity and pounding dance music. However, Parookaville is quickly becoming one of Weeze’s biggest attractions, with tickets vanishing within a day of their release. If you love all things weird and wonderful then you need to treat yourself with a visit to Parookaville.

Oktoberfest/Volksfest

Like any German town, Weeze takes Volksfest seriously. Although it might not be on the scale of Munich’s legendary Volksfest, Oktoberfest, Weeze’s Volksfest is visited by many Dutch revellers and beer-makers, giving the festival a slightly different feel to other celebrations. If you’ve already done Oktoberfest in Munich this is a brand-new way to experience the classic German event.
